In whatever situations in life, external factors can have an effect on us. It doesn’t really matter what line of work you are in, whether you’re an artist or a surgeon. I am certain that all of us experience this in our day to day.
Finding the right people to surround you is an easier task than you might imagine. Most of us just leave it at “I don’t know these kinds of people”. We never bother to make the effort to find and connect with them.
Don’t “prophesize” the kind of people you meet and get to know. This is what you’ll expect and sometimes unconsciously, this is what you’ll work for. As an artist, you don’t actually think “I’m not going to come up with a great design”, do you? Same thing goes here.
You also need to make a mental note on the kind of people that aren’t good company. What I mean is, these are the people that aren’t uplifting – they tend to pull you down instead of supporting you with positivity. And sometimes, the negativity isn’t that obvious. There are people that would make you feel good all the time – no constructive criticism on your design, no flaws, and no negativity. You’re simply a rock star to them. That’s not exactly inspiring, right?
“Invest more time with people who bring positivity in your life.”
You know you are with an uplifting individual when being with his/her company makes you want to be “more”. You want to be more of a concept designer, to learn more, or to help more people.
Connect with a person who is a learner. This is one of the signs that this is a “positive person”. They learn more, they know more. It goes to say that this is pretty much the essential in the list because after all, a person cannot impart knowledge that he does not have.
Knowledge is of no use without sharing or application. It’s no use hanging out with a person who is tight lipped about what he knows. With all that knowledge, it is important that this individual is a giver – meaning, they are open to share what the learned and experienced. They also share so they can teach you to do more and make greater work.
There are people who you think are confident but deep down they’re envious of your work or of you, as an artist. Spend time with an individual who is ok for you to do better than he/she does. Because that means they care that you’re making positive work in your life and they do not let their egos get in the way of influencing you.
It doesn’t always have to be face to face – connecting with people, especially when it comes to mentors and such. Nowadays, you can do that in front of your computer or on your phone. There are many great artists and teachers that offer free online lessons, podcasts, webinars, etc. that you can take inspiration from. It’s not the same way as to physically spending time with a person, but in some ways, it can help fill you with positive fuel.
