Why Resolutions Suck...

Jan 06, 2016

It's a new year and that means... a brand new start. A blank canvas, if you will. How are you going to become a better artist, a better partner this year? Well, this is the time for Resolutions, right? Did you make any New Year resolutions?

In this post I want to talk about why resolutions just don't work and what you really need to do.

In my online art school, I see students all the time in my courses who feel that they just need to learn one thing... anatomy, for example. They think, once I learn anatomy then my problems will be solved! It takes about four weeks, though, for the honeymoon phase to wear off and they realize they didn't solve any problems at all. In fact, they added a whole bunch of new problems!

Where is that levator scapuli, again?

After the five week mark they discover that they're now in a pissing contest between willpower and inertia? Who wins? Inertia, right? After all, Inertia has all the time in the world to wait... :)

Willpower, is finite. It has an end point. IF the only tool in our toolbox is willpower, well, we're gonna loose that fight. Fortunately, though, it's not.

See, eventually "willpower" encounters a mountain that it can't scale all by itself. A mountain maybe more powerful than it is. At least, more powerful until we remember what else is in our toolbox: MOTIVE.

MOTIVE = THE WHY

WILLPOWER is the muscle. Doesn't matter why, it just matters that I WILL NEVER LET THIS AS@#*LE WIN...

I may have the willpower to push through a meditation session until my body gets used to sitting still for that long.

I may have the willpower to start a new painting. To break through the blank canvas... but do i have the will power to finish it...

... do YOU have the willpower to keep working on your art or do you find that eventually you just stop, you just can't move on?

Eventually, everyone HAS TO answer the question, WHY? Why am I doing this? What is my motivation? Why is this important to me?

When we make RESOLUTIONS we make basically say, "Hey, I really need this. I'm going to commit to getting this one thing this year."

But, in my hypnosis, I believe what we need is to get RESOLVED.

We need know the WHY of what I want, the motive behind the master plan, if you will.

Sit down right now and write out not things that you need, or that you necessarily want to do... sit down right now and write ten things that you want to contribute to humanity. That your life is impacting others because of.

Because one of the key things that we need is to hook our goals up to is a REALLY BIG WHY... something larger than us.

Willpower can achieve great things for us. We can go on a diet. We can show up at the gym, but unless we know our WHY and have a STRONG WHY... then we're going to fall off the diet, or we're going to stop going to the gym.

Maybe something that MOTIVATES us is to share our journey, our struggles with others so that they don't have to struggle so much. That's what I do.

My entire business is built around me sharing the struggle, because it's important to me that the world is a better place because I'm here. When I create, I create for myself, but I also think of all the other people that are stuck, and I think of all the moments that I get stuck, and I will not let those moments stop me because I know that once I overcome those moments I can help somebody else. I can help them achieve their goals because I didn't give in to being stuck, and that's a RESOLVE that carries me forward and builds my business day by day.

Sit down a write a list of ten resolves, ten things that you're resolved to accomplish this year that will impact the world around you. Think about how they'll impact the world, who they'll impact.

It could be just that they impact your kids, because your kids are your world. It could be that they impact your students, your students can be your world. It could be that it impacts literally the world.

Whoever it impacts, just bring it outside of yourself. List those ten things that you're resolved to accomplish this year. Thank you so much for reading this, for listening to this. I wish you a fantastic year and that all your resolves come true. Take care.
